I had the wonderful opportunity to install another blog design last week. This time it was for the lovely Amber of Banjo & Scout. We've been following each other's blogs for quite some time, so getting to know her a little better while also designing something for her was a great experience. Below, I'll share a little about the design inspiration and process with you!

When Amber contacted me, I knew right away what sort of style and feeling she would want Banjo & Scout to evoke. With such a folksy title, we took a lot of inspiration from nature. I referenced photography from several of her past posts (specifically her outfit posts in wooded areas) for ideas. This was especially helpful when creating all the foliage, as I wanted it to feel authentic to Amber and be representative of her surroundings. Amber was not at all afraid of color, which is a real treat. It allowed me to pick some gorgeous, bold, natural colors and Banjo and Scout's color scheme just might be my favorite yet. Mossy green, deep mustard yellow, dark moody grey, a bold berry blue, and a bright fig inspired purple. The real magic was balancing out all the earthy, woodsy, moody elements with a streamlined and clean backbone. All that color pops beautifully against the soft white and linen.

To see the design in action, be sure to give Banjo & Scout a visit! I had a lot of fun with little details this time around, such as hover effects, so check all those out as well. Be sure to say hello to Amber while you're there, too! She's a great friend to have in the blogging community. Thanks so much for letting me design for you, dear!
P.S. I mentioned before that I would be slowing down my design services a bit. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to schedule out clients, so I hope those of you who have already contacted me can understand and bare with me a bit. My design services are booked until the end of 2014 and I will be updating the information on the Design Services page soon to reflect some changes that will be happening. It's an exciting time! Thank you all so much for your interest in my services.
A COLLECTION OF ALMOST FORGOTTEN IPHONE (& A FEW DSLR) PICTURES.

descriptions of pictures are sorted by row, below

1 | Autumn in the foothills is super lovely. I took these pictures on a hike a few weeks ago — one of the first signs I saw that let me know that Fall was finally coming.
2 | An afternoon affogato (a scoop of chocolate brownie ice cream and a shot of espresso). My favorite treat lately.
3 | The skies (especially in the morning) have been unreal lately.
4 | Pippin shaking it out during a refreshing morning hike.
5 | The first fallen leaves in Julia Davis Park.
6 | I gave myself a bit of a haircut. It was getting a little too post-pixie mushroom-shaped and it definitely benefited from a reshaping. Haircuts make me happy.
7 | Pippin goes all out with the photobombing.
8 | Pumpkin beer is my favorite beer and these new fall floral tights are lovely as well. I also finally own a felt hat and it's the perfect color (I suck at selfies, though).
9-12 | I got off work a little early this past Saturday and was itching for adventure. But it had been raining all day (and for days) so we decided to just pack a little picnic and stroll along the river. The rain let up for a bit, even. It was beautiful to see some green springing up one last time from all the rain amongst all the autumn colors.

With the season changing, I like to reflect on my routine and reassess those things I call priorities. I'm experiencing quite a few changes this month, in addition to the lovely weather shift. It's an exciting time for Will and I and I'm just trying to take a quick step back and appreciate everything as it is now. I can't wait for the days ahead, but I'd also love to live in all these little happy moments. It's always a good idea to slow down for a bit, especially when you've moving forward so quickly. It's so important to create that balance in life, I think. So, that's exactly what I plan on doing.

As I sit in my chilly apartment this morning, bundled up in a cozy turtle-neck and sipping a hot cup of coffee, I'm feeling very grateful for this inspiring season. For the opportunities both Will and I are having, for all the wonderful people in my life that love and support me, for this space, and for all of you (that stick around even when I don't have the time to post). You can expect to see me around here a lot more the next few weeks!

Happy October!

My schedule has been a little hectic lately, so while I actually did the install for this design on Monday I'm finally getting a moment to tell you all about it on Friday. That's just life sometimes. Regardless, I'm so excited to share my most recent work with you! Designing for Kassandra was really fun — we have very similar styles and tastes, so getting to the same place creatively to envision the new look for her blog was relatively easy. I'll share a little about the design inspiration and process with you!

Kassandra's blog is titled The Desert Poppy, so rightfully I wanted to take a lot of inspiration from the desert. But, having already done a very deserty design, I didn't want the design to feel unoriginal. And as with the previous (Desert Darling) design, I didn't want it to be too deserty (think cactus) or come off as cheesy. Kassandra also wanted everything to come off more modern and clean and moody, so we made some bold choices that I think made all the difference. Adding a chalkboard sidebar really set the stage for this design. It added such a unique and interesting element! But, I didn't want it to be too distracting — so I kept it slightly grey instead of a harsh blackboard. This complimented the paper textured background and desert colors wonderfully. I went with a array of desert greens this time, with a pop of coral and poppy pink. The addition of hand-drawn desert floral and succulent accents really tied everything together.

Be sure to give The Desert Poppy a visit to see the design in action and see all the fun details at work. Be sure to say hello to Kassandra while you're there, too! Thanks so much for letting me design for you, Kassandra!

I'll be slowing down my design services a bit, as I just don't have the time to work on them as I used to. But if you are at all interested in having me design for you, don't hesitate to email me for more information and let's reserve you a spot!

Happy Friday!

The Balloon Classic last weekend, followed by several days of fall-like weather, has me super anxious for autumn. After all that excitement, I'll admit, I was a little upset when the forecasted high this weekend was 90. But my walk to work this week was marked with quite a few trees already dropping yellow leaves! And when I got off my shift just after 8:00 this evening it was already cool and dark outside! I'd call that a sure sign of a fast approaching new season.

Our autumn is always full of so many great events and traditions, but I don't want to miss a thing this year! So, a while ago I compiled a list of all the autumn activities I have planned, which I've listed below.

+ Day hike on the Hull's Gulch Interpretive Trail
+ Watch the Balloon Classic from the park (and hills) — Done!
+ Take a camping and/or backpacking trip in the Sawtooths
+ Walk around Art in the Park (doing this in the morning!)
+ Eat and bake pumpkin flavored everything
+ Walk around the Hyde Park Street Fair
+ Find a good recipe for homemade apple cider
+ Decorate for Halloween
+ Visit a corn maze or pumpkin patch
+ Carve Pumpkins!
+ Make our halloween costumes (see last years here and here)
+ Go to an exhibit at the art museum
+ Go on more photo-adventures and start doing outfit posts again

Please come soon, new season.
Because I really want to watch Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown again.

The other day I tried to explain to someway why it is that I love the Balloon Classic in Boise so much. I don't think I quite got my point across in that quick conversation, but writing my thoughts here might have better results. Friday morning I woke up early to an anxious pup whining, wanting to be let outside. I decided, since I was already up, to take him for a quick morning walk in the hills behind our apartment. I was sleepy and grumpy and lonely (Will had been gone for work for two weeks), trudging up the trail quickly. But as I made my way to the top of the ridge my spirits were instantly lifted as I took in the view of colorful hot air balloons floating above the valley (pictures from that morning here and here). I breathed in deeply, breathed out slowly, sat down on top of the hill and watched dozens more balloons launch from the park across town as the sunrise warmed me up.

Sunday, Will was home and Pip and I were happy. We all woke extra early to put on warm clothes and make a pot of coffee before heading down to Ann Morrison park to watch the final launch of the weekend. On this final day, all of the pilots will launch in a three minute window, weather permitting, and the result is particularly magical. On a cool morning, that feels particularly like autumn, with mist hovering above the damp dewy ground, dozens (I think there were 50 balloons this year) of hot air balloons inflate into life before your eyes. The park transforms into a whimsical garden of color. Perhaps it's the happy nostalgia surrounding all my memories of the River Festival (an event that occurred yearly when I was a kid), but watching the Sprit of Boise Balloon Classic every year fills me with a childlike sense of wonder, if for only a few days.

This year, after watching them launch and hover above the city in the park, we decided to then get back in the car with our packed thermos of coffee and drove high up into the foothills to watch the remaining balloons float across the valley. What a magical morning. And what a perfect transition into a new season.

A COLLECTION OF ALMOST FORGOTTEN IPHONE PICTURES.

1 | I've been waking up a lot earlier than usual lately. Like, almost always before the sun has come out from behind the hills completely. That's really early for me! I've been hiking a lot more too, thanks for fair weather. This was a pretty sunrise in the foothills, while I was out walking with Pip.
2 | Just some weeds, my favorite new nail color, and documenting the fact that I sometimes have to put on a jacket in the morning now (yahoo!).
3 | Baking for my favorite ladies at work on a chilly, rainy morning.
4 | Coffee and pastries a few Saturdays ago.
5 | The loveliest mail ever from Alma.
6 & 7 | Will has been gone a lot lately (last week and this week) for work and I've been keeping myself occupied at night by rearranging/redecorating parts of our apartment.
8 | The clouds just looking freaking gorgeous one morning last week; I had to panorama it.
9 | Took myself out to lunch last payday when I wasn't feeling well.
10 | Just some #methodsofselfcare. Tea, ice cream (and midol), and sketching design ideas before dinner.
11 | Pippin is an even bigger baby than I am when Will is gone. I think he's done with me today. He wants the fun human to come home.

The days are finally getting shorter and I am very grateful.

I have the easiest DIY ever to share with you today. Like, seriously, if you have a sharpie and a scrap piece of wood (that's just been lying around, sadly, begging you to use it for months) then you're already halfway done. Open up that sharpie and write some pretty words on the wood and you're really done. And you've got something cool and unique to spruce up some wall space. I've been sprucing up all sorts of corners of our apartment lately. I'm finally putting up some of the art and prints that we've had lying around — not knowing where to hang them. Something about Will being gone all this week (for work) has me a little stir crazy, or cabin feverish. But hey, I'm getting things done. I digress.

There is this awkward door in our apartment's kitchen. Literally every single person we've had over for the first time, when getting a tour of the place, opens this door and goes "Oh, what's in here?" expecting to find a full pantry. Or maybe a stacked washer and dryer. But they are all quickly disappointed when all there is to see is a giant water heater; that's all that's back there. Sorry, guys. This is apartment life. To top it off, the disappointing door is framed by an off-center air vent and a crooked phone jack. I hung the sage branch not long after moving in, to try and fill the dead space next to it, and balance it out a bit. But despite the pretty branch, this little section of our kitchen has always seemed off to me. So today I hung this Let's Stay Home print (from Maiedae) and made a little wooden sign (inspired by this) to hang as well. I think it makes quite the difference.

See how I easily made this kitchen sign below.
SUPPLIES NEEDED

+ scrap piece of wood
+ printer + computer
+ text editing software
+ printer paper
+ a sharpie

INSTRUCTIONS

+ Measure you scrap piece of wood (mine measured 12in x 5in).
+ Choose/create a phrase to use.
+ Using a text editing software, chose the font (I used Tamoro Script) and layout for your phrase of choice.
+ Be sure to keep the entire layout within the measurements of your wood piece.
+ Print out your phrase onto plain printer paper.
+ Trim down the paper to fit the wood piece and tape in place.
+ Trace directly over the phrase with a sharpie, pressing firmly.
+ The sharpie will bleed through the paper and lightly mark the wood.

Happy Monday! I'm excited to share some recent design work with you today!

Alma contacted me wanting to completely redo her design. She told me about how she had stopped blogging because she had lost the desire to post due to frustration and boredom with her simple design. I wanted to bring everything about her blog back to life. We both agreed that what she needed was an entirely new look to accompany her new blog and blog name; that way Alma would be able to blog without the limitations her current blog was posing. And she needed a place to post freely and comfortably, a place that felt like herself, and to have everything posted beautifully.

Alma was a dream to work with. This girl has some serious style, and that style is adorable. The day after we began hashing out ideas she posted an image to instagram of her bike. The basket on her bike was stuffed to capacity with letters and packages for a trip to the post office. I knew immediately I wanted to incorporate that into the design; it fit perfectly! Inspiration for this design came easily, Alma spewed it out in every direction and I sure ate it up! I also took a lot of ideas from mod fashion and her adorable wardrobe. Polka dots were a must, but keeping them calm colors was key to them not overpowering the design. All the other colors were selected by flipping through her instagram and the great mood board she created for me on pinterest!

Be sure to head over to Alma's blog to get the full tour, say hi, and let her know what you think of the new design! She's starting over with this design, so show this new blogger some love! And don't forget to check out her About page. We did an adorable design for it, including an illustration of her pup and other doodles :)

And of course, if you're looking to redesign be sure to click that "DESIGN SERVICES" link up on the Navigation Bar to see the Design Services page. I'd love to design for you! You can read more about what a complete custom design from me includes here.
If you're wanting my opinion on the matter, these last days of summer are the least lovely of the year. Not terrible, by any means, just the least lovely. August always seems to draw out longer than any other month as I'm always anxious for it to be over. Will is always out in the field (for work) around this time too, which will surely make these next few weeks seem even longer. I'm sure feeling ready for shorter and cooler days filled with crisp air and that special renewal of inspiration only Autumn brings.

The fact that I work in retail isn't helping how much I'm longing for the change of season. We've already gotten in so much pretty fall items at Anthro — I tried on both the dress and cardigan above the other day and fell in love immediately. Now I just need the daily temperatures to not rise to 80 or 90 degrees. The mornings have been getting a lot cooler lately, though, which has me even more hopeful for autumn air. It also has me baking (isn't autumn just perfect for baking!?); if I bake before noon I don't burn up the house by simply turning the oven on :) I'd also love a few more cozy pieces for our place for the cooler months; like this beautiful Mitla Moda woven rug, some dreamy curtains, and lots of comfy blankets.

Raise your hand if your pining for fall, too.

Happy Weekend!

I first discovered Twice a few weeks ago by clicking on an add for the site on Facebook (which is something I never do). I was shocked I had never heard of the company before! Twice is an online resale store. Most items are gently used clothing, but some items are still new with tags. And the brands they offer are exceptional — were talking Anthropology, J. Crew, Ann Taylor, Free People, Madewell, Gap, etc. Not to mention all items are marked down 70% to 90% off their original retail price! And of course, because Twice offers gently used clothing, that means you can send in old items from your closet! They only accept "classic brands" off their accepted brands list, but you will get paid for items they decide to sell (instead of having to wait for it to sell to get paid)! They will even send you a free shipping kit to help you clean out your closet.

I ended up picking out six items for my first purchase from Twice. I was surprised by how much some of these pieces were marked down! Especially since two of them were new with tags (the limited skirt and zara top). I did end up sending half of them back, though, rather unfortunately. I kept the Ann Taylor Loft dress and skirt and The Limited skirt. I would have kept the pants, but they were a little to small in the waist — which was really a bummer, because I've been wanting a pair of black corduroy pants for a long time and they were such a good price and in pristine condition. The Zara top looked cute online but was an immediate no when I tried it on; it made my boobs and shoulders look super weird. The piece I was really disappointed about was the Lucca Couture dress. The pictures on Twice made it look super comfy, structured, and in great condition. None of those things were true. I should have noticed before buying that it was made out of viscose, but even still that dress felt like nothing close to viscose to me. The material was atrocious, the fitted waist stretched right over my belly and looked rather stretched (and sheer) and lumpy on (and was super itchy).

Regardless, I was super happy with this first purchase from Twice and will definitely buy from them again. The free returns does help out a lot, too! The pieces I did keep were so nice and I've worn them all already. I wore the Ann Taylor dress immediately the day it arrived and didn't take it off for days because it is so comfortable and effortlessly stylish and pretty. They are all pieces that will become staples in my wardrobe. And let's talk a minute about how much I saved! The Ann Taylor Loft dress was originally priced at $84.49, and Twice priced it at $27.95. The Limited skirt was originally priced at $68.99 and Twice priced it at $18.95. The Ann Taylor Loft skirt was originally priced at $58.98 and Twice priced it at $9.95. Now, I also had a promo code for 50% off my order so really I paid $13.97 for the dress and $9.48 and $4.98 for the skirts or about $28 total for the pieces I kept! That's almost $200 worth of savings. For the quality of the pieces, I feel like this was a steal!

Last Tuesday was my mom's birthday and we planned a lovely little party for her to celebrate. Because it was a weeknight, we decided it would be fun to cook her dinner at her own home. What's better than a birthday party that comes to you!? We cooked some of her favorites; she's a huge fan of Mexican food, so the menu included fish tacos, fresh pice de gallo and guacamole, and chocolate angel food cake for dessert (my sister, Bee, is the best baker ever).

When I sent out an invitation to my mom telling her the details, she responded enthusiastically and made a joke about a piñata filled with laffy taffy. Keep in mind she had no idea the menu was Mexican food and that her party would be fiesta themed. I don't take piñata suggestions lightly, especially when it fits a party theme so perfectly! So, naturally, I made her one. And filled it with laffy taffy, obvi.

I contemplated just simply buying a piñata, but I was surprised by how expensive a classic donkey piñata from Target was. I ended up buying all my supplies as well as the candy to fill it from the dollar store for $6.00. That's half of the price of just the piñata! Plus, I'm sure you might have some of these supplies already taking up space among your craft supplies. Especially since I used cardboard to eliminate the time required for paper-mache. If you're confident in your craftiness, I highly recommend going the DIY route. I mean, it is going to get smashed anyway :) See how I created this colorful piñata below.

DIY PIÑATA:

SUPPLIES NEEDED

+ large pieces of cardboard (I used one of those big display boards, but a large cardboard box would work great)
+ streamers in different colors
+ duct tape & masking tape
+ a sharpie
+ scissors
+ craft glue
+ twine or rope (to hang)
+ assorted candy (to fill)

INSTRUCTIONS
+ Make sure you have two large pieces of cardboard of equal size. Sketch out the shape of the donkey's body with a sharpie. Once satisfied with the shape, cut it out. Use the cut out piece as a stencil and trace the shape onto the other piece of cardboard. Cut this out as well. You should now have two identical donkey shapes.
+ You will use the remaining scraps of cardboard to create a frame between your two donkey pieces, creating a 3D piñata. Cut strips the lengths of all the sides of the donkey's torso. Secure these pieces to one side of the donkey, using duct tape on the inside and masking tape on the outside.
+ Fill the piñata with candy.
+ Secure the other side of the donkey to the rest of the piñata, reinforcing all of the corners and joints with extra tape.
+ Pull out a few feet of streamers and fold it the length up onto itself as many times as you can. Fringe the streamers by cutting half way up them.
+ Cover the entire outside of the piñata with the fringed streamers. Start at the bottom of the legs and work up. Overlap the previous streamers a bit every time. Switch colors after a few rows of the same color have been glued.
+ Once everything is dry, your piñata is ready to hang!

Our blindfold just happened to match my mom's outfit perfectly. She had the first go at it, followed by an entertaining round by my brother-in-law, and my sister ended up breaking it open by channeling her work frustration ;) (I got a video of that one). Overall, I'd call this first piñata making endeavor a success! A special thanks to Will to holding the beam for us, as I had to use a ladder due to my mom's yard having no large trees.

I'm so excited to share my most recent work with you today! I am so happy with how it turned out. Cam contacted me wanting to completely redo her design as she needed an entirely new look to accompany her new blog name. Along with a design redo, Cam changed her blog from Sincerely Cam to Desert Darling. I'll share a little about the design inspiration and process with you!

Cam expressed that she wanted to take inspiration from the desert (the new title is desert darling, after all) but didn't want the design to feel super deserty or come off as cheesy. I'll be honest, designing for Cam was pretty simple. We both started blogging around the same time and I've been following her from the beginning — I've gotten to know her style really well. Once she told me what she wanted, things started to roll out! I went with strong yellows, pinks, and oranges but kept their usage minimal. I downplayed the strong colors with a soft, sandy linen background. The main column and sidebar naturally became bright white, to make her posts pop and to gently contrast the sandy linen. The addition of hand-drawn desert floral accents really tied everything together and made the overall look more girly and a touch whimsical. It turned out rather 'desert-darling', if I do say so myself!

Be sure to head over to Cam's blog to get the full tour, say hi, and let her know what you think of the new design!

And of course, if you're looking to redesign be sure to click that "DESIGN SERVICES" link up on the Navigation Bar to see the Design Services page. Just a heads up: I talk about depression in the first two paragraphs. If that makes you uncomfortable, feel free to skip below to see some questions I have for you!

I said it before, but I'm going to say it again: I've been feeling a little disconnected from my blog lately. There are a lot of changes I want to make to this space but am unable to do so just yet. I'm the type of person who likes to do things completely and to the best of my ability or not at all. This is leaving me feeling pretty stuck with the current state of my blog — which can obviously be quite a creative rut. It gets even more complicated when you top off that sad stack with a nice bout of depression.

I know I've talked about my depression on here before but it's a little more difficult to do so when you are at such a low. I'm not sure why I experience depression severely in the summer, particularly (on average), but it's been getting to the point this time around that I'm considering getting some extra help again. I'm tired of having so many ideas but absolutely no motivation or energy or desire to do them. I want to create again and post again and feel normal feelings again. Above all else, I want to write again. I always thought, "You know, when I'm depressed, at least I can write about that." But I can't write at all. In fact, I've wanted to put this post together all week and am just now finally finding a reason to do so.

I may feel disconnected from this space a bit, but I don't have to be disconnected from my readers and the wonderful community of bloggers I happily call friends. We all are always talking about how great this community this, and for good reason. I feel supported here. I feel comfortable here. I feel inspired here. I share quite a few bits of myself here with you, and I've gotten to know quite a few bits about some of you, too. But I'd love to get to know some of you even more! Especially if you haven't commented before or aren't a blogger yourself.

Jess (Foreign Room) recently shared a post with questions for her readers and I just couldn't get over how wonderful of an idea it was. So I'm here today with some questions for you! Please feel free to answer some or all of the questions.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

+ What are 5 things you are most happy about right now?
+ What's your favorite item in your closet?
+ If you could live anywhere, where would it be and why?
+ What is something you've learned this week?
+ What should I binge watch on Netflix next?
+ If you could learn to do anything what would it be?
+ Chocolate or Vanilla? Tea or Coffee? Beer or Wine? Fruits or Veggies?
+ What was the best party you've ever been too?
+ Which blogs are your favorite daily reads?
+ If you could be a fictional character for a day who would you choose?
+ What would you usually do if you had 30 minutes of free time?
+ When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Leave me your answers in the comments below! I can't wait to read your answers and talk with you more :)
And let me know if you have any questions for me! I'd love to make a Q&A video.

I get all the awards for going outside when it was 106 degrees, let alone picking lavender in that heat. But I wasn't going to let the extremely uncomfortable temperatures keep me inside this day. Lakeside Lavender farm in Nampa, ID was a place I had been really looking forward to visiting (ever since hearing about the festival they put on every year). And they were only allowing public cuttings for one week. And Sunday was the only day we were able to go. And this was the last year they were going to be doing it (I think the family is moving?).

The heat and sweat was well worth it. It was breathtakingly beautiful out there — with the rows and rows of purple blooms backdropped by golden grass, dense trees, and the pretty blue lake. And boy, I was ready to run through all those fields straight to the lake for a dip after cutting lavender for maybe 30 minutes. But the two giant bundles of fresh lavender I got to take home was reward enough. They had a whole array of different strands of lavender to chose from. I cut a big bundle of the super sweet smelling "provence" and it is now drying out in our bedroom and providing a really pleasant aroma. I also grabbed a great big bundle of a few different culinary strands, which has more of a herby sage-like smell to it. I can't wait to make something delicious. Do you have any favorite lavender recipes? I'll at least make a simple syrup from some to add some lavender to iced coffee! Yum.

It was just so lovely out there guys. I wish I could have fresh lavender in my home year round. But the pretty pictures Will took of me will have to do for memory, I suppose. But I really love all the pictures he took, hence the huge photo dump. Even if I was all sweaty and red in the face, he always captures me so well (I think). Mostly, I'm still shocked that I walked away sunburn free!
I've been very quiet over here, and I'll unfortunately say that things will likely continue to be for awhile. Summer gets me down, guys. And when you're depressed, it takes quite a lot of effort to write up posts. These feelings are only exacerbated by the fact that this blog has me feeling a little stuck. I have been working on a new site/blog, but for reasons that would take far too long to explain (and likely bore you), the plans to move everything to a new location keeps getting pushed back. I'm still sharing on instagram all the time, though, if you want to keep up with me. And I won't neglect this space entirely; just expect something more like 1 or 2 posts a week for now :)

Yesterday I uploaded my final #100happydays post, much to my own disbelief. Had it really been 100 days already? Did I really actually completely finish a lengthy instagram challenge I decided to do on a whim? And, most importantly, did some of those rainbows-and-butterflies type of side-effects that were promised actually occur? Yes, yes, and yes. What even.

I decided to try this challenge simply because so many people I follow on instagram were already doing it! I'm a copycat. But also, honestly, because I am someone who battles anxiety and depression. I'm always seeking proactive solutions to make my life better and happier despite those struggles. Knowing that my depression always kicks me hardest in the summer, I wanted a head start to encouraging myself to seek out and create happiness. This was a perfect way for me to do so and to document the daily journey — I'm already taking far more pictures than necessary anyway! And because I like experiments, so why not :)

I wasn't expecting magic by participating in this challenge, but it would be silly to not acknowledge some changes and happy things that occurred over the last 100 days. I've shared, sort of in list format, some of my thoughts below — now that I can reflect on the challenge as a whole.

#HAPPYEMORIE: MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE #100HAPPYDAYS CHALLENGE

+ Posting every single day was SO HARD for me. I'm not the type to share daily on any social media account. But I pushed myself to do it. At first I told myself I was just doing it for documentary purposes. But the more I shared the more I became comfortable with it. I mean... I enjoy scrolling through instagram on a daily basis just to see little glimpses into other peoples' lives, to see beauty from someone else's perspective, to share in other peoples' happiness, and to grasp a bit of inspiration from the everyday of another. I realized I am just as much a part of that community as the people I follow and the people that follow me do so for a reason. I should feel no shame in posting anything. Instant confidence boost!

+ Spoiler alert: I'm not happy every single day. I stopped expecting myself to be. I realized it was okay to be angry or sad or hurt or sick and still have happy moments. For goodness sake, people are not one dimensional. And days and life have many ups and downs. But, it's still okay to pick out the happy moments to share — and it feels really good to, too. Sometimes that just meant lots of pictures of food, because come on yes.

+ I did notice my perspectives switching very early on. It is empowering to be in control of your own happiness. I remember having a really bad interview at the very beginning of this challenge, but not by fault of my own. I remember being upset that I wouldn't get a job at this company, but then consciously deciding to not let it effect me. I suddenly felt grateful that I had the opportunity to find a better job. Did I handle every bad situation this way? No. But, I do feel I am more aware of my reactions to things now. That's always a good thing.

+ Trying to find something to be happy about everyday actually made me happier. And somehow, I started feeling a little more confident in my skin along the way, too. I became happy with myself, I suppose.

+ So much changed over the last 100 days! It is so great to be able to look back through these pictures now and see how much happiness I experienced through all that change! We had just moved when I started this challenge, now my apartment feels like home. Spring was rainy and lovely and I spent all my time outside. Will and I celebrating 3 years together. I got a DSLR and have been spending time improving my photography. I got a job at Anthropologie. I got the courage to chop all my hair off again. I've started a bunch projects I never seemed to have time for before. I've started to really take my health seriously. And I'm feeling really happy.

See all of the images from my #100happydays challenge up close by looking up #happyemorie an instagram.

Did any of you complete this challenge?

A collection of almost forgotten iPhone and DSLR pictures

1 This picture is actually about a month old — from the end of May. We had some cold, rainy, lovely weather for a bit. This was taken at the North End Organic Nursery on my phone on a Saturday trip looking for plants and new pots. A lovely memory and a picture I love a lot for no real reason. // 2 A perfect cantaloupe, my favorite fruit. I've gotten really good at picking good produce. // 3 & 4 Will came home with a tripod for me one day (he found a good deal on one!). These were taken that same night at sunset because we couldn't wait to try it out! // 5 & 6 From a hike on the upper part of Hulls Gulch with my sister. The wildflower is a mariposa lily. And the view of the valley from up there is ridiculously beautiful. // 7 Post inventory nap. Pippin snuggles are the best forever. // 8 Bored, stuck inside due to the heat, selfie. // 9 Another chance, cool, rainy morning. Will went into work late so we could enjoy a slow morning together. Love. // 10 Nighttime park sits. // 11 My mama went on a trip to Montana and came back with gifts for me — this pretty new camera strap and an adorable wire headband. // 12 Weaving something like this for my walls. // 13 & 14 My mom came out for a morning hike with me and then treated Will and I to a breakfast with her at Big City Coffee. She's the best mom, obvi. // 15 This face, forever. Makes me so happy. // 16 A recent morning hike.

Since I didn't share much this month, I thought it'd be fun to go back through some pictures (the end of May to current) that captured some special moments. It sure is a helpful activity for attempting to defeat that summertime sadness — I'm making a real effort to focus on the happier moments instead. But know what really helps? The weather is being kind to me with a break from the heat these next few days. It's currently well into the afternoon and I still have the windows wide and haven't turned on the AC at all! Thank you, clouds. I might even get some rain tomorrow (fingers crossed)!
Latrina makes these lovely, collaborative mixtapes every so often by taking suggestions for songs (from other bloggers) for a certain subject. The recent summertime mixtape is just so lovely — I've been listening to it today while doing housework. And hey, I suggested #14! Radiation City is my ultimate, favorite summer jam. It was fun to hear Foreign Bodies among some other favorites! Visit Of Trees and Hues to see who submitted the other songs and be sure to give the playlist a listen!

Will's birthday was about a week ago, and we celebrated it simply (but lovely) as per usual. After making the little booklet 25 Reasons Why I Love You instead of a card for Will's birthday last year, I wanted to do something equally as cute and sentimental. What better day do you have to show the person you love just how much you love them — in a cute way — than on their birthday?! You know, in addition to Valentines and anniversaries and any day you feel like it, of course!

I first thought of making a little booklet again, but full of love notes and memorable pictures, like this Love Notes Photo Book. But then I thought of making little envelopes for each love note and the idea took off from there! I thought the result was super cute! But I kept the design really simple, too. I think you could use this card for several people, not just your significant other (as long as you're cool with calling them darling). You can fill the envelopes with whatever you fancy, not just love notes. Like confetti! Or folded pieces of money! Or a gift card (you'd need a bigger envelope....)! You know, birthday type things :)

Get the link to the free template, and see how I made this card, below!

WHAT TO DO

1. Print the card template and the envelope stencil
2. Fold the card in half — there is a line down the center on the template to make this easier
3. Cut out the envelope stencil
4. On various colored pieces of paper, trace the envelope stencil
5. Cut out your mini envelopes (6 in total)
6. If desired, draw patterns on some of the envelopes
7. Fold the envelopes and secure the sides — I found it easiest to tape the sides and bottom of the envelopes together (on the inside, so the tape is not seen)
8. Glue the envelopes into place on the card — there are spots designated by rectangles to make this step easier and to get perfect spacing
9. Take your envelope STENCIL and cut the folded bits off (so you have just the rectangle remaining)
10. Use this small rectangle piece as a stencil to cut pieces of paper to slide into the envelopes
11. Fill the envelopes with notes, or whatever you desire
12. If you have difficulty keeping the envelopes closed, use little bits of masking or washi tape to secure them
13. Write a message on the inside of the card, too. and you're good to go!

Happy card making and birthday celebrating!
It's been awhile since I've shared in this space and in the last few days I've really missed doing so. I certainly did not plan on taking a 13 day break from posting here, but it would be silly to not admit that I desperately needed it.

Things have been a little hard for me lately. Not for any big reason, I guess I let a lot of little things get to me and those little things started adding up after awhile. I try not to focus on the negative, I've learned to move past that stuff quickly — keeping my anxiety and depression in check requires that kind of action. It's crazy how small moments of negativity can grow and consume you if you let them.

A certain summertime sadness overcame me recently. Summer often leaves me feeling trapped indoors, lethargic, and anxious. I'm sure it has something to do with the heat and lot to do with my mental state during this season. As a result, I've been really neglecting the creative side of me (and my life). At some point, all that energy I was putting in to feeling bad about myself and my circumstances was so overpowering that there was nothing left to put into creating — and other things of enjoyment. But, I'm now trying to make a real effort to find ways through this summer sadness phenomenon. I'm making time for what I love and treating myself as I deserve.

Scroll down to see some pretty summer inspiration I've collected that represents some of my current thoughts, feelings, and desires.
What summery things have you been enjoying lately?
Any advice on how to enjoy the summer (for someone who considers this the worst time of year)?
I've been really craving an escape to the mountains and/or woods like mad. I'll just have to keep wanting for a bit — we won't have the opportunity to go off on a camping trip until later this summer. I'm trying to remind myself that there are still plenty of escapes and simple adventures near me. I am so lucky to live in a beautiful city like Boise, where the outdoors and indoors tend to bleed into one another more often than not. I created this little reminder for my phone using a phrase I have hanging in my home and using images taken on in-town or just-up-the-hill adventures. I love the summery, escapist result.

Please feel free to use any of the of the images above to give your phone a fresh and colorful new look. Just view my blog on your phone, then click the image above you want to use to view a higher resolution. Then, hold down on the image, select save image, and find it in your camera roll from there. You know the drill :)

What are some adventures you enjoy without leaving town?
I'm sitting in my apartment with the air conditioner blasting, tissues close at hand (woohoo allergies!), and Radiation City's Animals in the Median playing — which is a perfect summer album, in my opinion (listen to 5 tracks from it below). Summer is here to stay, much to my disappointment. I can barely stand the dry heat in Boise already. That just means we are a little bit closer to Fall and being able to wear layers again though, right? I'm trying to stay optimistic about these long hot months ahead by day dreaming of new pieces to add to my summer wardrobe. I've been all about fun but classic patterns, lightweight materials, and pops of bright colors lately. I tried on the first top at Anthropologie the other day and about died because it is so cute and fits so well but is so out of my price range.

June, June, June, how are we here already? Summer sure seems to be here in full force and I am definitely feeling it. My allergies and the heat have been keeping me indoors more often than not lately; I'm really missing how often and long I use to be out hiking. We took the camera and Pippin out for an adventure, despite it all, yesterday and June welcomed me with a nasty sunburn. My poor shoulders are relaxing and recuperating in the AC today.

May was a great month for me. Spring stuck around a little longer than usual, Will and I celebrated three years together, and I got a job! I was a little sad to let May go, especially since it means those dreaded long, hot summer months are ahead. But so many things are looking up for me, I can't help but be excited for what's to come!

— GOALS FOR JUNE —

+ I've been talking a lot about changes that are going to take place on this blog, and you probably still have no idea what I mean (or have started to ignore me, haha). But, it's really really coming soon! I promise! I've been holding off on updates here because it's not worth the effort right now — because this blog will be moving completely within a month or two! Along with moving to a new domain (my own domain! finally!), I'll no longer be using blogger, this blog will have a new name, and everything will be completely rebranded and redesigned! There are going to be so many changes and I'm going to do it all at once and it's a little overwhelming that I'm talking in run-on-sentence but I'm so excited!

+ P.S. If you're wanting an update to your own blog, I'm offering super awesome discounted design services all summer long to Blogger users. I'll be offering services on more platforms soon, too. Check out those services and rates here.

+ After months of job hunting, there is nothing quite like finally finding one to really boost your mood! I got a job at Boise's Anthropologie, recently, and it still feels a little unreal. I've only had one day of training so far, but I can't wait to get working! My main goals for this month naturally revolve around my new job: getting more comfortable with the store and job, becoming as familiar as possible with merchandise, getting to know all my awesome new coworkers, and establishing a new routine that involves work every week!

+ Having a more steady form of income of my own again will be glorious. You have no idea how long it has been since I have bought something for myself, especially clothes. I need to go through my wardrobe at some point and get rid of the pieces I've been hanging onto even though they are falling apart. I desperately need to restock my basics, like t-shirts and jeans. Not a high priority goal, but I'd like to have a fresh, easy, classic wardrobe for work for the summer.

+ It's really really hot outside already. Did I mention that yet? At least I think so. Hiking during the day now is a rather unbearable, but I'd still like to remain as active as possible. I'll be biking or walking to work, but I'd love to do some workouts inside — in the air conditioning. I'll probably pick up pilates and yoga a few times a week but what I'd really like to do is lift a bit again. I miss my biceps. I think one day of upper-body and one day of lower-body training a week will be totally doable.

How is June treating you so far? Are you happy for summer (weirdo)?

I have never put any sort of booze into a smoothie before, but I will say as a bit of warning: it changes everything. I originally was only going to add in water as my liquid in this smoothie (which you can totally do if you don't want alcohol), but when I saw a bottle of white wine chilling in the fridge I couldn't resist. And I have no regrets. This smoothie is so fresh, crisp, sweet and tart, and perfect for a warm summer weekend afternoon. There are some other surprising ingredients in this recipe: like cucumber. Just trust me, it all blends together wonderfully and tastes absolutely delicious (and unlike anything else).

The book I've chosen to talk about that I read this month is Longbourn by Jo Baker. You may recognize this book as the April selection for the ABM book club, which is where I first heard of it too. I immediately wanted to read it after seeing it there and further learning that it was set in the Pride and Prejudice "universe," but instead followed the storyline of the Bennet families servants. Yes please.

— LONGBOURN BY JO BAKER —

I read every single Jane Austin book as a teenager and identified strongly with Elizabeth (from Pride and Prejudice), especially, at the time. I even secretly wanted to live back in late eighteenth century Britain — except not, because holy cow: class devisions, servitude/slavery, lack of women's rights= zero fun. But boy, did it all seem romantic.

I immediately got into this story; Jo Baker does a remarkable job of mimicking Jane Austin's writing style while still offering a unique voice that feels more modern. She also intertwines little snippets of the Pride and Prejudice storyline, so you are always aware of the timing and context of things. I will say, this was my absolutely favorite aspect of the book; seeing the whole series of events from a different perspective — arguably a more grounded and realistic perspective — gave a entirely new light to the original love story. As a teenager, I was infatuated with The Mr. Darcy but now I'm more like "Eh" about the whole thing, haha. Seeing all of the sister's and their drama from Sarah (primarily), Polly, and Mrs. Hill's point of view was changing as well.

My one concern going into this book was that the storyline would feel limited, just based on the precept that this was creating a story within an existing classic. It seemed to me, at the time, that there would be little room for character development and plot. I was wrong, definitely. I feel in love with all the characters. My favorite part was the third section where James' real parents were revealed and we got a glimpse into his past.

Have you read Longbourn? Did you enjoy it as much as Pride and Prejudice?
